Clean Raw Water Pump Cover

How to Avoid a Source of leaks

A less than perfect raw water pump cover is likely to leak, no matter how much the screws are tightened

Raw Water Pump Cover plate Cleaning from Marine Diesel Basics

from page 64 Marine Diesel Basics 1

Steps to a Leak-Proof Cover

Ensuring the cover does not leak is not complicated, but does require some care.

  • clean off any traces of the old gasket. if necessary use a utility knife blade. Be careful not to gouge the (soft) brass
  • check that the cover is perfectly flat (ie. not bent or warped) but laying it against the edge of a ruler
  • remove any scoring or burrs (defects in the metal) with emery paper
  • sometimes the cover can be reversed if one side becomes too badly scored
