Steps to a Leak-Proof Cover
Ensuring the cover does not leak is not complicated, but does require some care.
- clean off any traces of the old gasket. if necessary use a utility knife blade. Be careful not to gouge the (soft) brass
- check that the cover is perfectly flat (ie. not bent or warped) but laying it against the edge of a ruler
- remove any scoring or burrs (defects in the metal) with emery paper
- sometimes the cover can be reversed if one side becomes too badly scored
