Nigel Calder

“Reliable systems are your life insurance”
– Nigel Calder

Nigel Calder’s most famous book, the Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual has sold more than 300,000 copies and is widely acclaimed by both boaters and professionals in the field.

Nigel, and his teaching partner Jan Athenstädt, present three online courses organized into almost 200 lessons of clear, expert teaching:

  • Diesel Engine Maintenance Course
  • Boat Electrics 101
  • Advanced Marine Electrics

MDB receives a small commission – at no extra cost to you – for each enrollment.

1. Diesel Engine Maintenance Course

63 lessons  –  Nigel and Jan take a detailed dive into all aspects of marine diesel systems. The thorough maintenance course will give you the confidence and skills to troubleshoot, maintain, and extend the life of your engine—saving you time, money, and stress out on the water. Whether you’re a cruising novice or a seasoned sailor, his clear, practical teaching will help you master your engine like never before.

This is by far the most comprehensive online resource you will find.

The course is $299.  You will  receive:

  • immediate access to all course content

Marine Diesel Basics Workshop

This 4-hour live webinar with Dennison Berwick, marine mechanic and creator of the Marine Diesel Basics books, is for everyone who wants a basic understanding of the marine diesel system on powerboats and sailboats. Novices will gain the confidence they need to carry out basic maintenance tasks that are essential to running a reliable engine and avoiding common problems. They will gain knowledge of the principles and essentials which are at the heart of basic trouble-shooting, and which can be helpful in discussions with professional mechanics. Using clear, simple explanations and illustrations, participants will cover:

  • Diesel fuel – importance of clean fuel, HUM, fuel filters and microns
  • Cooling – seacocks, impellers, thermostats, heat exchangers and coolant; how to avoid two common ways to drown an engine
  • Electrical – load testing batteries, understanding starters and the importance of anodes to minimize corrosion
  • Lubrication – functions of engine oil, oil filters and dipstick diagnostics
  • Engine essentials – why diesels work, hoses, hose clamps, and belts
  • Breathing – getting enough clean air into the engine compartment and into the engine; understanding and maintaining a wet exhaust systems
  • Marine transmissions – damper plates, keeping the gearbox happy, couplings and flexible couplings
  • Struts, cutlass bearings and propellers – how they work and how to inspect

Workshop Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

      1. Be familiar with the parts of marine diesel systems
      2. Know how the critical parts of the systems function
      3. Understand the important of basic maintenance
      4. Gain confidence in being around marine machinery.
      5. Experience decreased anxiety carrying out maintenance tasks.

The live workshop is $600 (up to 40 participants)
